Abstract

Water is the main source of epidemics since it is universally used and supplied to a large population from a few centralised sources. Microbioiogical status is commonly employed for determining the quality of water because it acts as a source of certain diseases. During distribution, drinking water is exposed to microbial contamination. It is therefore not surprising that the factors affecting the microbial quality of potable water during distribution have been the subject of numerous studies. To make the drinking water more safer a post treatment system, in addition, at household level needs to be established.

Abstract

The water supplies from dug wells in different geological formations showed high values of total conforms, faecal conforms and non-indicator bacteria. The high counts were typical of the warmer months. Sandhu et al found significant levels of total conforms, Escherichia coli and faecal streptococci in potable water supply sources of rural communities. It was detected that almost all the water supplies were positive for total conforms and only 7.5 per cent of the water supplies were uncontaminated.

Abstract

Antibiotics play a major role in clinical medicine in eradicating pathogens. Unfortunately, excessive/inappropriate use of antibiotics has contributed to the spread of important clinical and public health problems of antibiotics resistance. The present study aimed to examine a comparative analysis of the antibacterial efficacy of ethanol and methanol ischolar_main extracts of W. somnifera with commercial antibiotics against the bacterial strains. The ethanol and methanol ischolar_main extracts of W. somnifera found to show equalent/potent antibacterial activity against the bacterial strains as compared to antibiotic discs. Methanol ischolar_main extract of W. somnifera showed an effective antibacterial activity might be due to presence of numerous bioactive compounds. Thus, there is a tremendous need for future research to provide better evidence, to address the isolation and characterization of these bioactive components of methanol ischolar_main extract of W. somnifera responsible for the antibacterial activity, offer an ecologically and economically safe drug compared to commercial antibiotics.
